Harryâs education was to follow a precedent set down by his motherâs side of the family, not his fatherâs, not least as Charles complained very publicly about how much he had hated his own school days at the remote and austere Scottish institution Gordonstoun. Harryâs first outing was to Jane Mynors nursery school in Londonâs Notting Hill Gate, an early sign that his mother was going to attempt to at least show him what a normal life looked like, before he became entirely swamped in Royal privilege. However, there were reports that he was bullied by other children: even at the age of three, Harry was set apart from his peers by merit of being a member of the Royal family. The other children knew there was something different about him and took it out on him. Harryâs sunny nature as an adult is all the more remarkable given that he had to put up with a lot while still so young.
After that, from the age of four he attended the pre-preparatory Wetherby School in London, starting a week late due to illness and famously pictured on his first day shaking hands with the headmistress. Wetherby, with its uniform of grey blazer piped in red, had a reputation for being one of the fiercer pre-prep schools: its pupils came from wealthy families who wanted only the best for their offspring, who tended to end up at the countryâs top public schools. Both boys were pictured at the start of each term, Harry clutching his Bugs Bunny satchel, sometimes smiling for the cameras and sometimes being encouraged to behave by his mother, who always accompanied the boys.
Harry then followed in the footsteps of William and went on to Ludgrove School. This was a well-regarded independent boarding school based in Berkshire with a reputation for sending its pupils on to some of the most prestigious schools in the country, but Harryâs arrival coincided with one of the worst periods of his parentsâ marriage, leading to fears that he might be bullied on the back of it. Rumours of their problems had now become public, but in 1992, matters went far beyond fiction as the mighty House of Windsor began to resemble nothing so much as a luridly written soap.
In May that year the book Diana: Her True Story by Andrew Morton appeared in the bookshops and was an immediate sensation. Although the extent of Dianaâs involvement did not become clear until after her death, it was clear right from the start that she had at the very least given friends tacit encouragement to speak on her behalf (in fact, she had contributed directly, as later became clear). The book laid clear the full disaster ground that the Royal marriage had become, detailing the affair between Charles and Camilla Parker-Bowles and even Dianaâs bulimia and suicide attempts. It caused furore and was in part responsible for the coupleâs eventual separation and divorce.
Nineteen ninety-two, which the Queen was later to describe as her âannus horribilisâ, just grew worse and worse.
